Human rights education involves providing information and building awareness about human rights, but it is also a comprehensive process by which people at all levels of development and in all social strata learn respect for the dignity of others and the means and methods of ensuring that respect within a democratic society. Human rights education, training and public information play a role in the promotion and achievement of stable and harmonious relations among communities and in fostering mutual understanding, tolerance and peace. Pressure is mounting on states to direct education towards the full development of the human personality and the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. They are encouraged to include human rights, humanitarian law, democracy and rule of law in the curricula of all formal and informal learning institutions. Interdisciplinary programmes in human rights are ever more widespread in university and continuing education contexts.
